International human rights lawyer, Yasmin Sooka, will be in London to launch a report analysing patterns of recent sexual violence by the security forces in Sri Lanka. The report is based on sworn testimony collected by a group of international and UK based lawyers, with the cooperation and coordination of Kirsty Brimelow QC barrister at Doughty Street Chambers and chairwoman of the Bar Human Rights Committee (BHRC) which also participated in the elaboration of the report. The bulk of cases cover violations that occurred as recently as 2013 and 2014.
Ms Sooka was one of three legal experts asked by the UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon to report to him on the final phase of Sri Lanka’s long running civil war. The panel of experts found credible allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by both parties in the period 2008-9.
