Police call handler, Kathryn Smith had access to confidential information as part of her duties. It was alleged that she had accessed such information in August 2012 which was linked to the police hunt for Dale Cregan and passed it on to her boyfriend knowing that he was a friend and neighbour of the Cregan family and likely to give the information to them. Dale Cregan was the main suspect in the police investigation of 2 murders in Manchester at the relevant time.

Kathryn Smith was acquitted alongside co-defendants Sean Booth and Anita Cregan.
