IPP prison sentences under renewed scrutiny from prison reform charities

In an article which appeared in Solicitors Journal last week, leading prison reform charities including Prison Reform Trust and Howard League have renewed the pressure on Government to find a solution for the open-ended (IPP) sentence prisoners.  Garden Court North Chambers’ Pete Weatherby QC was also interviewed.

Pete, who has been involved IPP cases since the system’s inception, said:

“Prisoners would be released much more effectively and swiftly and we would not be in the appalling position that we are in now where, in effect, prisoners are kept in administrative, arbitrary detention, arguably unlawfully.”
