Civil actions against the police & public authorities

Members of Garden Court North Chambers have extensive experience in actions against the police and public authorities (such as other criminal justice authorities, the prison service, immigration detention authorities and government departments), including:

  • Assault;
  • False imprisonment; Malicious prosecution;
  • Misfeasance in public office;
  • Negligence;
  • Discrimination and actions under the Equality Act 2010;
  • Human Rights Act 1998 claims; and
  • Data Protection Act 1998 claims.

We have expertise in both civil and criminal law which enables Chambers to offer a valuable combination of skills to tackle this complex and specialised area.

Some of Chambers’ work in this area arises from criminal cases in which our members are or have been instructed enabling continuity of representation.

Members of the Team have been involved in associated inquest and public inquiry work, most notably the Hillsborough inquests (2014-2016) and leading challenges to the miscarriage of justice compensation scheme. They also provide training to professional bodies, individual firms and community groups on developments in this area and are active participants in the Police Actions Lawyers Group.

Although Chambers is in Manchester, our members frequently travel to courts across England and Wales. If you would like to know more about our actions against the police and public authorities work please contact the Practice Management Team on 0161 817 6377 or at gcn@gcnchambers.co.uk.
