Discrimination in Public Law Training – Legal Action Group
Garden Court North’s Tom Royston will be speaking at the ‘Discrimination in Public Law Training – Recent Developments & Hot Topics’ training on 29 September 2026, hosted by Legal Action Group.
The online seminar, which takes place from 6pm-7:30pm, will delve into recent developments in discrimination in public law, focusing on specific areas of practice such as immigration, asylum support and social welfare law.

Tom specialises in social welfare law, regularly appearing in the Supreme Court and the High Court in test cases about systemic problems with how the state treats individuals. Among these cases, Tom has represented local residents in judicial review claims brought against councils in Trafford and Somerset for unlawful discrimination in council tax reduction schemes, and acted on reviews of the Personal Independence Payments scheme.
Adam Straw KC and Shu Shin Luh, both of Doughty Street Chambers, will be speaking alongside Tom. They will use recent caselaw to reiterate the important legal and procedural principles under the Equality Act 2010, the public sector equality duty, Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), EU law, and public law equal treatment.
