Orgreave 42nd Anniversary – March and Rally
Garden Court North’s Pete Weatherby KC will be speaking at the march and rally marking the 42nd anniversary of the Orgreave riots, taking place on Saturday 13 June, 2026.
The rally will see attendees assemble at City Hall, Barkers Pool, Sheffield from 12:30pm, with the march due to begin at 1pm. It is the first rally taking place since the Orgreave Inquiry was announced in July 2025 and launched in March 2026.
The Inquiry will examine police and government planning and decision-making leading up to the events at the Orgreave Coking Plant on June 18, 1984; the violent confrontations, the immediate aftermath, and the development of the subsequent public narrative; and the charging decisions and prosecutions of the 95 arrested picketers, all of which collapsed after evidence was discredited.
The Orgreave Truth and Justice campaign has called on attendees to bring family members, comrades and friends to march through Sheffield in support of their call for the Inquiry to seek justice for the striking miners brutalised by the state at the Orgreave Coking plant.
In his capacity as lawyer and Orgreave campaigner, Pete will discuss the decades-long pursuit of an Inquiry and its potential ramifications.
Pete has been a steadfast campaigner for such an Inquiry, alongside the late Head of Garden Court North, Mark George KC. Mark was a tirelessly dedicated advocate, and one of the most vocal campaigners for an inquiry into police brutality at Orgreave.
Last month, Pete was joined by Kate Flannery, leading campaigner in the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, and other speakers at the annual Mark George KC Memorial Lecture. Kate drew comparisons between the South Yorkshire Police’s actions at Orgreave with its actions at Hillsborough, both of which Mark was resolute in shining a light on.
At the rally on 13 June, Pete will be speaking alongside Donna McLean (writer & activist), Andrea Egan (UNISON General Secretary), Gaz Jackson (RMT Regional Organiser), Sarah Choonara (grassroots footballer & community activist) and John Dunn (ex-miner).
