ILPA: Best Practices in Refugee Family Reunion Applications & Appeals

Lucy Mair from our Immigration team, alongside Kate Ormsby from Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit, will deliver a webinar examining the routes for refugees to apply for family reunion and focusing on the rules, case law, UKVI policy, common reasons for refusal and how to best argue cases for family members who are not covered by the rules.

Lucy and Kate will examine the impact of NABA 2022 on refugee family reunion as well as the changes to the immigration rules on 28 June 2022 which extended the rules to include children of refugees who are 18 or over at the date of application and unaccompanied children whose relatives in the UK are refugees where maintenance and accommodation requirements can’t be met. The session will also consider the best methods of gathering evidence and the use of objective and expert evidence, and tutors will also look at how to apply for legal aid (ECF) for applications and/or appeals or alternative ways of obtaining pro bono assistance, including for costs with travel tickets. The event will address current crises, including the legal avenues for family reunion for Afghans and Ukrainians trying to reunite with family in the UK.
