Uncovering and challenging Manchester’s links to contemporary slavery

Garden Court North Chambers and Human Rights Watch invite you to a screening of the BBC Arabic documentary Pregnant and in Chains in the United Arab Emirates, followed by a discussion and a Q+A with director Christine Garabedian. The film will be introduced by Human Rights Watch researcher, Nicholas McGeehan.

Following an in-depth investigation lasting more than a year, BBC Arabic exposed the hidden persecution of women who have broken the United Arab Emirates’ strict laws on sex outside marriage. Pregnant unmarried women evade the law by having illegal abortions, leave the country to give birth, or have abortions abroad. The vast majority of women who find themselves on the wrong side of the law are domestic helpers from poor countries like Ethiopia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Nepal who are bound by the UAE’s ‘kafala’ or sponsorship system.
