Garden Court North’s housing team pays tribute to “tremendous housing lawyer” Simon Mullings

3 September 2024

Garden Court North’s housing team were greatly saddened to hear today of the unexpected death of Simon (Spike) Mullings whilst on holiday in Scotland this weekend. Spike was a tremendously committed housing lawyer and champion of legal aid. He won the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year in the social welfare category in 2020 and co-chaired the Housing Law Practitioners Association from March 2020 to March 2024. He was one of the first to push for a stay on possession proceedings in March 2020 and together with Marina Sergides of Garden Court Chambers made sure that the needs of tenants and the homeless were properly considered by the Ministry of Justice throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

James Stark, who, on behalf of the North West Housing Law Practitioners Group, liaised closely with Spike and Marina at that time, paid tribute to Spike today:

“This is unspeakably awful news. Spike was not only a terrific housing lawyer and advocate for legal aid, but he did a lot to ensure housing lawyers across the country were heard and not just those in London when dealing with the MOJ and the justice system. He and his co-chairs invigorated the Housing Law Practitioners Association during his tenure. He was also a very talented musician, always the best dressed man at the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards, and was just immensely likeable. We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

Garden Court North wish to extend their sympathies to Simon’s friends and family. He will be missed.
