North West Housing Law Practitioners Association (NWHLPA) AGM 2018

17 December 2018

Rent housing disrepair

Garden Court North Chambers were delighted to host the North West Housing Law Practitioners Association’s (NWHLPA) Annual General Meeting for 2018 on Tuesday 11th December 2018.

James Stark, a member of Chambers, is one of NWHLPA’s five coordinators, together with Robert Brown of Shelter, Nicola Chadwick of Peasegoods Solicitors, Amy Tagoe of CEL Solicitors and Ben Taylor of WTB Solicitors.

In a convivial atmosphere the co-ordinators of NWHLPA were pleased to report on a successful All Day Conference – at which the speakers included Giles Peaker of Anthony Gold solicitors (known for his housing law blog Nearly Legal), John Gallagher of Shelter, Alice Richardson of Trinity Chambers, and James Stark on topics as varied as the new Housing Fitness for Human Habitation Bill to defending claims for absolute possession orders.

Also discussed were the topics suitable for evening talks in 2019, details of which will be published in the spring. The agenda included the issues surrounding the forthcoming Flexible Hours Pilot at Manchester Civil Justice Centre, which looks at extending the hours the court is available and its effects upon tenants and housing law practitioners. A lively discussion followed, with members concerned about the potential impact of hearing housing possession claims outside of normal court hours on the vulnerable, those with young children and with disabilities as well as upon the workloads, and personal lives of lawyers and advisers.

NWHLPA is open to all housing lawyers and advisers in the North West. If you wish to join the mailing list for events, please contact Nicola Chadwick on nicolachadwick@peasegoodslegal.co.uk and follow NWHLPA on Twitter @north_housing.
