Garden Court North’s Christian Weaver appeared on The VOICEBOX Podcast, published yesterday (7 April 2026), to discuss a range of topics including legal literacy, modern policing, and using the law to protect individuals and communities.

“Being a barrister, whereby you’re arguing for something in court, aligned with my skillset, and was the most effective way that I could push what I felt was most important in society,” Christian told VOICEBOX host Gaby Mendes.

The podcast proceeded the ‘VOICEBOX: Know Your Rights’ event at The Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival, which Christian spoke at on 12 October 2025.

During the interview, Christian discussed his work on the Covid-19 and Southport inquiries, as well as his involvement in the campaign for Awaab’s Law, which came into force last October.

Christian also unpacked the origin of his legal rights project ‘The Law in 60 Seconds’, which aims to guide the public through their legally entitled rights in an easily understandable manner.

“There isn’t an alternative, accessible resource out there that explains people’s rights. I became passionate about it, questioning why law wasn’t taught in schools and who that benefits”, Chrisian said on the VOICEBOX Podcast. “I realised that, if the powers that be know the law and you don’t, you can’t even stand up for yourself. It led to a mission alongside my goal to become a barrister … and it’s since grown into a book and hopefully a movement.”

Christian delivered a memorable 60-second explainer on the law around self-defence (at 18:10), and reflected on his own personal experiences of injustice early in life, looking at the discrimination faced by his family in the era following the racially motivated murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993.

He also analysed the crucial, oftentimes overlooked role of media in raising awareness of social injustices around legal cases.

“I’ve always found it so strange that as a lawyer, you go into courtrooms and hear of some of the biggest tragedies and scandals”, Christian said. “You’ll fight for your client, the courtroom door closes and, unless there’s press there, nobody else ever knows. I used to think how bad it would be if all lawyers treated their job as you go into court, do your job, and go home, because society would never hear about the things that we hear.”
