Garden Court North is delighted to announce that Pragnya Iovine and Iqra Shahid have accepted invitations to join Chambers following successful completion of pupillage.
Iqra Shahid
Iqra has a broad and multidisciplinary practice spanning immigration and asylum, protest rights, and housing law.
During pupillage, she has successfully represented clients before both the First-tier Tribunal and the Upper Tribunal, securing refugee status in asylum proceedings.
Iqra has also acted in a number of high-profile protest cases, including the “Barclays Five” case, in which she was led by Audrey Cherryl Morgan of Garden Court Chambers on the legal argument. Together, they successfully argued that a terrorism connection did not apply.
In her housing practice, Iqra has defended possession proceedings on behalf of multiple vulnerable clients.
Iqra’s supervisor Lucy Mair said: “It has been a real pleasure to supervise Iqra who has very quickly developed a loyal following of solicitors, and achieved impressive results for her lay clients, including in difficult asylum appeals and multi day protest trials in the Crown Court. We are thrilled to have her join us as a colleague.”
Pragnya Iovine
Pragnya has a multidisciplinary practice, with a focus on inquests, actions against public authorities, criminal defence and housing.
During pupillage, she has worked on a range of complex Article 2 inquests, including deaths in mental health settings and prisons. She was led by Anna Morris KC on the high-profile inquest into the death of Emily Moore.
Pragnya has also gained experience in actions against public authorities, advising on potential claims involving false imprisonment, assault, battery and human rights breaches, while undertaking research on Equality Act matters.
She has continued to develop a criminal defence practice with a particular focus on protest-related cases, appearing in both the Magistrates’ Court and the Crown Court. She continues to accept instructions across criminal defence work, especially protest matters.
Pragnya has a thriving housing practice, defending clients in possession proceedings, anti-social behaviour injunctions, housing discrimination claims and homelessness-related matters.
As a member, she intends to continue developing a practice across inquests, actions against public authorities, housing and protest defence.
During pupillage, Pragnya was jointly supervised by Ciara Bartlam and Elizabeth Mottershaw.
Elizabeth said: “Prag has really used pupillage to build on her previous experience working on actions against the police and inquests. She has shown herself dedicated to her clients and able to handle difficult cases. She is an asset to Chambers.”
Ciara said: “Prag is already a remarkable lawyer and continuously shows her strong commitment, both to her clients and to the protection and promotion of fundamental rights. It has been an honour to supervise her.”
Iqra and Pragnya will join our specialist practitioners committed to Garden Court North’s ethos of fighting for justice through publicly funded work, offering representation to those disadvantaged by discrimination and inequality, or who have multiple and complex needs.
